The regular Chromatic Harmonica has a full major scale in the key of the harp and it repeats every 4 holes for each octave. When you press in the button it raises the pitch of each hole by a semi-tone. The key of C is the most common key available, the same as the white keys of a piano. This means that when play the Chromatic Harmonica it is like playing the white keys on the piano, Then when you press in the b utton on the chromatic you are playing the black keys on the keyboard along with a some of the white ones.
They get their name because they incorporate the full chromatic scale and allow the player to play in any key using one harmonica. Chromatic models provide the complete 12 note octave with all sharps and flats. It is also the preferred instrument for Jazz, Classical and also used for Popular Music and in some instances for Blues. Famous chromatic harmonica players include Larry Adler, James Cotton and Stevie Wonder.
All of these come in their own Hardshell box complete with a polishing cloth. |

| The 10 hole Swan Chromatic Harmonica |
|
The 10 hole Chromatics are small with a practical portability. They are the same as the 12 hole chromatic with a 2 1/2 octave range instead of a 3 octave range. It is great for a wide rage of songs. The Hohner Chromonica #260 is also a very popular 10 hole chromatic. It retails for $109.95. Is this the same quality as a Hohner? No... but at this price it is a great value and the feedback I get from those who have purchased it say it is well worth the $75 difference! |

| The 12 hole Swan Chromatic Harmonica |
|
| This is probably the most common chromatic available. The 12 hole have a 3 octave range with 48 reeds (tones). This is the model I recommend anybody wanting to buy their first chromatic harmonica, go for a 12 hole chromatic in key of C. |

| The 14 hole Swan Chromatic Harmonica |
|
In between the 12 and 16 hole chromatic, the 14 hole has a 3 1/2 octave range. A nice mid-size harmonica and only a little larger than the 12 hole chromatic. |

| The 16 hole Swan Chromatic Harmonica |
|
These big guys are the Granddaddy of Chromatic harmonicas and are very similar to 12 hole chromatics. The advantage of this larger one is the extra octave below middle C. The will take more practice because of their size and you will have to get use to finding a solid hold and cup around these harps. Also with the extra holes and octaves to switch between they require more practice to automatically know where all the notes are. Not for the beginner...but we all must have a goal! |
